With the rising popularity of Facebook, there is also a rise against the biggest social network on the web. One such spokesperson is Dan Yoder with Business Insider. In his article, “10 Reasons to Delete Your Facebook Account,” Yoder complains that Facebook’s policies are one sided, their privacy settings are not what they seem to be, and Facebook’s CEO (and therefore the company) has been known to have some unethical behavior.
Although Yoder makes some good points that Facebook isn’t as up front as it should be with what information really is in fact private, I don’t think it’s as big of a deal as he thinks. The whole point of Facebook is to get become more well known, to share with the world who you are and what you do. The advertisements are triggered toward the user but that’s not much different than a salesman making a judgment call on someone as they walk down the street to decide if that person would be a potential customer.
Yoder then goes on to claim that “Facebook is a bully” because it takes good aspects of other social networks and implements them into their updates. But isn’t that what any good business does? The number one reason, Yoder claims, to delete your Facebook account is that “The Facebook application itself sucks.” I argue that if Facebook really ‘sucked’ the public wouldn’t use it as much as it does. There are other social networks out there but they aren’t used nearly as much. Maybe that’s because most people already have a Facebook account so it’s convenient, or maybe it’s because people generally like Facebook, despite it’s flaws.
